OCEAN FRIENDLY RESTAURANTS
Another new program we just launched. Our goal is to work with the restaurants around the community to transform their business into ocean friendly facilities. Restaurants who want to become “Ocean Friendly” are required to adhere to three mandatory environmental sustainability requirements while choosing other optional items to include to their list.
Committee: Emily “Biggie Swallz” Swallow, Emily Sumner

If you enjoy gardening and like to get a little dirty, this program may be for you. A program working with community to transform typical landscaping into sustainable gardens that will prevent runoffs into our oceans.

Surfrider’s mission is the protection and ENJOYMENT of the world’s oceans, waves and beaches. This program was launched in 2015 in partnership with Venice-based startup, StokeShare, to connect at-risk youth from inner-city LA to the ocean through surfing. We host events where volunteers can witness young people discover their stoke and become future Surfriders.

TEACH & TEST
Teach & Test is an educational advocacy program that teaches students about urban runoff and water quality while empowering them to affect positive change in their community. Students at Santa Monica High School and Palisades High School test water quality at their local beaches on a weekly basis. Using marine biology lab equipment provided by Surfrider Foundation, students process and analyze the samples, tracking trends and patterns in bacterial levels. To raise awareness of the issues related to poor water quality, students share their findings and recommendations with their peers and the community through school meetings, community demonstrations, art and murals, presentations at City Council, School newspapers, local media and YouTube videos.
Help us spread the message of Surfrider’s mission and other current local events through tabling events. Dates, times, and location vary.
